Bjarke Ingels Interview

A fantastic video on Bjarke Ingels, a Danish architect who leads Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG, explains his design inspiration and approach to architecture. BIG uses the Chinese character “big” as its logo. Personally, I find it’s a smart brand identity move, but there’s a deeper level of meaning. The word BIG also accurately depicts the firm’s design approach in its projects.

My favorite part of the video is when Bjarke Ingels talks about the People’s Building ShangHai. The original concept is to have an opening in the building that allows people or traffic to pass through, and this concept eventually drives the shape of the building that looks like the Chinese character “People”. This is a type of design that my instructor of Spatial Design has been preaching to us about. He refers it as “thick design“. A “proper” design has multiple layers that contribute to its “thickness”.
